These filters are examined under a microscope, with researchers cataloguing the size, colour, and shape of suspected microplastics. Representative particles undergo Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), confirming the material’s plastic nature and polymer type. Microplastics, defined as fragments smaller than 5mm, originate from primary sources such as microbeads and secondary disintegration of larger plastic items; an estimated 2.7 million tonnes entered the environment in 2020, a figure projected to double by 2040.
