Playing Music Helps Older Brains

The inexorable decline in cognitive faculties that accompanies aging has long preoccupied neuroscientists, yet emerging evidence suggests that late-life musical instrument training may offer a robust countermeasure. Researchers at Kyoto University have shown that older adults who take up and persistently practice an instrument can preserve verbal working memory and reduce atrophy in the putamen and cerebellumsubcortical regions vulnerable to aging. This four-year longitudinal investigation builds upon earlier findings that even a four-month intervention yielded measurable improvements in memory and neural function. Such findings challenge the assumption that neuroplasticity declines precipitously with age, suggesting that targeted interventions can still effect meaningful change.

The Kyoto team initially recruited participants with an average age of 73 for a four-month training programme. After its completion, roughly half continued practicing their instrument for over three years, while the others ceased and pursued alternative hobbies. At baseline, no significant differences in brain structure or cognitive performance existed between the groups. The researchers subsequently invited all participants back four years later for structural MRI scans and cognitive assessments, including a verbal working memory test. This design allowed the team to isolate the long-term effects of sustained musical engagement from the transient benefits of short-term training.

Four years later, clear differences had emerged between the cohorts. Participants who had stopped practicing exhibited declines in verbal working memory and a reduction in gray matter volume within the right putamen. Conversely, those who continued playing maintained their memory performance and showed less atrophy in the same region. Moreover, the persistent practitioners demonstrated greater activity across broader areas of both cerebellums compared with their counterparts who had quit. The findings underscore the specificity of the effect, targeting precisely the subcortical structures most susceptible to age-related shrinkage.

The findings suggest that learning and continuing to play a musical instrument may delay or reduce some of the cognitive changes associated with normal aging. 'It's never too late to start playing an instrument, and starting in old age may have major benefits,' notes corresponding author Kaoru Sekiyama. She also emphasizes that music may be especially valuable for individuals who struggle to engage in physical exercise due to pain or other limitations. 'How fortunate that practicing music has such a positive impact on the brain and cognitive function!' she adds. Arguably, these results could reshape public health strategies for aging populations, positioning musical training as a cost-effective, non-pharmacological intervention.
