The Bellingshausen Sea’s coastline hosts Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers, major contributors to ice loss. Floating ice shelves could disintegrate faster if sea ice is absent, accelerating glacial discharge. Compounding this, the Antarctic peninsula experienced an extreme temperature spike, with highs reaching 15.4°Cmore than 20°C above the seasonal norm. Dr Hobbs argued the heatwave was exacerbated by the lack of sea ice.

Ecological repercussions include krill losing winter ice shelter. Emperor penguins, reeling from a catastrophic breeding failure in late 2022, face renewed threats as sea ice forms too late and breaks up too early, disrupting breeding success. Adelie penguin numbers are declining, and crabeater seals are compelled to migrate in summer, noted Dr Peter Fretwell. These trends underscore systemic stress.

Notwithstanding these trends, scientists caution that attributing the ice deficit solely to global heating remains premature; the repeated failure signals a regime shift. The heatwave peaked at 15.4°C on 5-6 June, far exceeding the average of -6.2°C. If such patterns persist, the region’s role as a buffer against glacial melt and sea-level rise will be compromised. Urgent monitoring is needed.
