Confronted by federal funding cuts imperilling his six-decade-long study of yellow-bellied marmots, Dr. Daniel Blumstein adopted an unorthodox strategy: he launched an account on OnlyFans. Known for adult content, the platform now hosts "OnlyMarms", featuring family-friendly videos of the rodents—an act of desperationdesperation/ˌdɛspəˈreɪʃən/L2绝望；拼命a feeling of having no hope and being willing to do anything to change a bad situation, as he told the BBC. The venture has generated over $5,000, netting the lab roughly $4,000 after the platform's commission, a modest yet symbolic lifeline. While insufficient to fully offset the financial shortfall, it underscores the resourcefulness demanded of contemporary field researchers.
The Marmot Project is the second-longest study of individually identified mammals globally, surpassed only by Jane Goodall's chimpanzee research. Because the marmot is neither threatened nor endangered, the research provides a baseline for population dynamics, unclouded by conservation bias. The concept crystallised while Blumstein observed his subjects, inspired by the television series *Margot's Got Money Troubles*. His students, embracing the project, devised the name. They navigated an early bureaucratic hurdle when the platform's verification software flagged the discrepancy between his driver's license and the account's profile picture, a marmot. Methodologically, the lab avoids conferring human names upon its subjects, marking them instead with dye and employing identifiers such as "dans_hat" to mitigate observational bias. This detachment underscores the seriousness underpinning an enterprise that might otherwise appear frivolous.
The team has capitalised on public engagement by inaugurating "Fat Marmot Week", a bracket-style tournament voting for the chunkiest specimen.
