The report, published on Tuesday, challenges the "standard reassurance" proffered by companies—that roasting destroys residues—as demonstrably inaccurate.
According to Coffee Watch, scientific evidence tells "a more complicated, less comfortable story," noting that certain pesticides of "high thermal stability" can bind to beans and emerge intact after roasting. Indeed, 21 per cent of roasted samples tested positive for pesticide residues, underscoring that the thermal process is not a panaceapanacea/ˌpænəˈsiːə/L3万能药;解决一切问题的方案a solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases; a universal cure. Pesticide Action Network Europe, a Brussels-headquartered organisation that counts PAN UK among its members, interprets these findings as evidence of a "toxic double standard." Some chemicals in question, though prohibited for use on European farms, are exported by European manufacturers to coffee-growing countries, only to return on contaminated beans. This cyclical irony, the report argues, constitutes an ethical and regulatory failure.
The sprays in question have been linked to a spectrum of health concerns, including cancer, reproductive harm, and endocrine disruption, as PAN Europe points out. Moreover, 60 per cent of pesticides used globally in coffee cultivation are classified as "highly hazardous." Notwithstanding these dangers, the regulatory asymmetryasymmetry/eɪˈsɪmətri/L3不对称;不均衡lack of equality or correspondence between things; imbalance persists: banned substances are manufactured in Europe, exported abroad, and reimported on coffee beans. Angeliki Lysimachou, Head of Science and Policy at PAN Europe, calls on the bloc to "act now to end this unethical and unfair double standard."
