The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will allocate $107m in emergency funding to bolster Ebola outbreak response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda, officials confirmed on Thursday, underscoringunderscoring/ˌʌndərˈskɔːrɪŋ/L3强调;突出显示(重要性或严重性)Emphasizing or drawing attention to the importance or gravity of something. the gravity of an epidemic now recognized as the third largest on record. Dr Satish K Pillai, the CDC’s incident manager for Ebola response, disclosed during a press briefing that the agency is approaching 1,000 confirmed cases across 31 health zones in the DRC, with an additional 31 cases identified in Kampala, Uganda. African health authorities have warned that, at current transmission rates, this outbreak may surpass all previous records and require up to a year to contain, a dire projection given that the worst Ebola epidemic on record infected over 28,000 individuals and claimed 11,000 lives between 2014 and 2016 in West Africa and the eastern DRC. As of June 15, the CDC reported 837 confirmed cases in the DRC and 19 in Uganda, with a cumulative death toll of 198 across both nations.
Although the risk within the affected regions is acute, the global threat is deemed low because the virus transmits exclusively through direct contact with blood, bodily secretions, or contaminated surfaces—a transmission mechanism fundamentally distinct from airborne diseases such as COVID-19 or measles, which are far more contagious. That said, the United States is among 22 countries that have imposed travel restrictions on individuals arriving from the DRC and Uganda, a policy criticized by public health experts for impeding the outbreak response rather than enhancing it. Efforts to contain the disease have been further hampered by pervasive mistrust among local populations, coupled with critical shortages of personal protective equipment and vehicles required for the safe transport of deceased bodies.
The new CDC emergency funding will supplement approximately $910m already pledged to combat the Ebola outbreak; however, African health leaders lament that less than 10% of those pledged funds have actually been received from international donors, creating a precariousprecarious/prɪˈkeriəs/L3不稳定的;危险的(因缺乏安全或保障而岌岌可危)Not securely held or in a stable position; dangerously likely to fall or collapse; uncertain and potentially risky. financial gap. Dr Pillai emphasized that CDC activities remain concentrated on controlling the outbreak in the DRC and Uganda while simultaneously ensuring domestic readiness to respond to any unlikely cases that might emerge within the United States. The CDC currently deploys 23 field staff supporting disease investigations and 125 personnel across both affected countries, and conducts biweekly coordination calls with US cities hosting World Cup events, which to date have primarily encountered heat-related illnesses typical of large-scale sporting gatherings.
